Whether you have recently moved or you are just seeking a change, choosing a hair stylist can be a bit daunting at times. It ranks fairly high when it comes to service/client relationships since the majority of people get their hair done and see their stylist consistently. Your hairdresser can often serve as a great listener, unqualified counsellor and a chair to just chat and gossip in. But the most important aspect of the stylist’s role is how well they can interpret and execute your needs.
Here is a list I compiled to help you out when you are seeking a new hairdresser:
- Ask friends and even strangers. If you see somebody’s hair that you like, don’t hesitate to ask them who did it. A hairdresser’s best form of marketing is word of mouth as their clients are walking advertisements.
- Book a consultation. Consultations can be incredibly helpful when you are trying to get a feel for the stylist. The advice and recommendations they give, and questions that they ask during the consultation can say a lot about the results that you will get with them. They should be asking you about your chemical history, the amount of effort you are willing to put into styling your hair, your inch compared to their inch, among other questions. And they should bring some suggestions and options to the table without being pushy.
- Test run with a shampoo blow dry. You can always give the stylist a test run to get a feeling for their style and abilities by booking a shampoo blow dry. This way you can also see how they take your request and execute it, without parting with any of your locks or chemically changing them just yet.
- You don’t have to shell out big bucks to get an amazing stylist. Just because a stylist is charging up the wazoo does not mean that they are the best stylist ever. If prices are higher, then the ability and experience hopefully should match, but don’t let that stop you from trying out a junior or intermediate stylist. Natural talent spans across all spectrums of hairdressing, but go with whatever you are comfortable with.
- With high volume salons, you will get what you pay for. Now that being said about not having to shell out big bucks, you need to know that if you go to a high volume salon that has a revolving door of cheap cuts going all day long, you are going to get what you pay for. Now, I am not at all saying these stylists are bad by any means, but you are going to be getting the basics at these sort of places because they want you in and out quickly as the goal is more for volume, not quality.
- Professional behaviour can say a lot about ability. It is okay to have expectations of professional behaviour from your stylist and if they abide by this behaviour then they are most likely a great stylist, because it shows that they care for and respect their profession. Your hairdresser should not be answering or looking at their cell phone, gossiping about anything work related, or using any sort of profanity. Also when you are getting a chemical service you should expect for your stylist to be checking on you or at least be around, not disappearing into the back room or outside for multiple smoke breaks.
- Ask the receptionist. The receptionist is the hub of the salon and they are one of the only ones in the salon that gets to see all clients as they come and go. They know the different styles and abilities of each of the stylists and can help match you up with who will most make you happy.
