One of the trends that I am loving as of lately is Rainbow Tips! This style provides a fun pop of colour into your hair and allows you to go as extreme or subtle as you like, and your colour palette is endless.

Here are some celebrities that have jumped on this trend (or helped to create it :))

Skin Tone & Hair Colour

I got a little nerdy and carried away on Excel and created this handy little chart for matching hair colour to your skin tone. It is just a general guide to what would best enhance what you already have.

Top 10 Memorable Hairstyles

The following is a list of my top 10 Most Memorable Hairstyles on both the big and small screen.  I need to impose that this is simply what left a lasting impression with myself, and that I know several key players such as Princess Leia, Jenny Hanley and Lola were left out.

The characters listed are from the past and even a couple from the present that I feel make an impact.  There is also a bit of Canadiana thrown in there, so for those of you not from here you may not recognize it, but after seeing her you will not forget it.

Which hairstyles have been the most memorable for you in TV and movies? Please let me know in the comments below!

10.  Rosemary Woodhouse

For me, when I think pixie cut, my mind will always wander back to Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse in Rosemary’s Baby.  Mia Farrow owned this hairstyle in 1968 and the fact that this picture is still brought into the salons today as a reference says a lot of the impact of this particular look.

9. Daenerys Targaryen

This is a newer character into this mix, but I do feel that Emilia Clarke’s portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in the The Game of Thrones series will leave a lasting impression in TV land.  This platinum beauty rocks the boho vibe with braids galore all while kicking some serious ass.

8. Kelly Kapowski

It is safe to say that I idolized everything about Tiffani Amber Thiessen as Kelly Kapowski in Saved by the Bell.  Whether it was a cropped jean acid wash jacket, a neon unitard or slouchy socks, it was always topped off by the oh so epic ‘Kapowsi Bang’.  Copious amounts of hairspray and backcombing went into my childhood trying to achieve her height.

7. Jo Stockton

When it comes to memorable hair and Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is often brought up.  But I feel that her as Jo Stockton in Funny Face showcased her natural beauty and brought the beatnik look to the forefront of mainstream.  This hairstyle would still easily work today with everything from the super short fringe to the tidy pony.

6. Joan Holloway

Christina Hendricks oozes sex appeal, and with her bombshell role as Joan Holloway in Mad Men it doesn’t get any better.  Although this is a current TV show, her entire look brings us back to the 50’s/60’s with great ease.  Her ginger locks are always impeccably done in fantastic fashion, even after a romp in the sheets.

5.  Lulu

Initially I was going to put Uma Thurman from Pulp Fiction on this list, but the more I thought about it the more I had to put the master of the hairstyle on here instead, Louise Brooks. Her look as Lulu in Pandora’s box has influenced styles since 1929.  She will always be the master of the bob with a bang.

4. Foxy Brown

Pam Grier is known as a woman who plays kick ass roles and Foxy Brown is no exception.  Pam’s whole look as Foxy Brown is absolutely iconic.  And although she has sported many styles throughout the years, her afro is hands down my favourite, as nobody can wear that style like Foxy Brown.

3. Pris

Daryl Hannah’s role as Pris in Blade Runner is one of my favourite styles from the 80’s.  Pris as a “Basic Pleasure Model” replicant, showcased New Wave style with an amazing nest of shaggy blonde hair that was backcombed and teased to new heights.  This look epitomized the 80’s take on the future.

2. Leeloo

Milla Jovovich plays a quirky humanoid woman named Leeloo in The Fifth Element.  Her entire look is incredibly iconic and is still heavily used as a costume, mainly at Comic Cons.  Her look would not be complete without her famous tangerine locks cut into the bob with bangs style.  I even had her colour shortly after this film came out.

1. Christine “Spike” Nelson

This character is probably not that familiar to you if you are not Canadian, but if you are then she is most likely an icon.  Amanda Stepto played Christine ‘Spike’ Nelson on Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High in the 80’s.  She is also on the current Degrassi:The Next Generation, but sadly her spiked bleached hair did not follow.  I can only imagine the amount of Dippity Do that went into this style over the years.

Lighten Up!

So winter is coming to a close, fashions are changing and let me guess, you would like your hair lighter?  The average female out there goes through a seasonal cycle of wanting to go dark in the fall, even darker in the winter, lighter in the spring and even lighter in the summer…and then repeat said cycle.  It is totally understandable as the hair colour reflects our moods and wardrobes throughout the year.

Now here comes the dilemma though, how to get lighter without damaging your hair.  I’m going to be honest with you, there is no real way around lightening your hair without adding just a bit of new ‘texture’ to it.  But there are some techniques and tips on how to achieve a lighter hue without leaving a messy hair carnage in your wake.

Clarifying Shampoo

Clarifying Shampoos are generally recommended to be used once to twice a month for people who use a lot of product as well as swimmers.  It contains acetic acids which breakdown product build up and rid hair of chlorine.  What they also have in them is colour stripping surfactants.  Now this does not mean that they are going to remove the colour completely but they will aid in fading it a little bit in preparation for lightening it.  So a couple weeks before you are going to attempt a hair colour change, try using this a few times. Just try not to go too crazy with the usage as it can really dry the hair out, so pair it up with the occasional deep conditioning treatment.

Rusk Clarifying Shampoo - Average price $12 for 380ml

Kenra Clarifying Shampoo - Average price $13 for 300ml

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three - Average price $18 for 300ml

Redken Cleansing Cream - average price $14 for 300ml

Highlights are a great option to lighten up your hair, without risking the damage of your entire head.  This option will also allow you to play with colour and get a couple of hues going, maybe even brave it out to try this season’s hot peach highlights!  And try not to be afraid of warm hues such as red and copper as they can really add to the overall look of a style.  There are so many techniques that can be use to achieve whatever look you desire, and a consult with your stylist will help you decide what that look is.  And in my experiences (myself included), if you are a natural brunette, chance are that you don’t actually want to go as light as you think you do.

Don’t Be Afraid of Scissors

If you are going to go lighter from darker, you need to accept that your hair will need a trim.  Your ends have generally seen a couple of season changes if you have longer hair and they can only take so much of a beating.  By giving your hair a nice healthy trim, it will only contribute to your overall look.  Even better, if you want to take it to the next step, opt for a fun flirty bob! A cute bob combined with a new lightened hue, hot!

Be Prepared

If this is a cycle that you know you are going to most likely follow throughout the seasons, try to be prepared.  Opt for demis and semis when it comes to your darker colours through the colder months.  And I know it is economically cheaper for you to opt for the box dye, but the amount of money that you have to pay to get that stuff taken out of your hair is most likely not worth it.

Chronicles of Hairnia

In recent years my hair has pretty much stayed within the zone of long layers and some shade of brunette, occasionally tossing in some bangs here and there.  But it was not always this way! I had about 10 years of every cut and colour you could imagine while going through some unfortunate raving and alternative phases.  I did this all with the help of some very creative and patient (due to my unrest and need to change every other week) hairdressers.

So, I thought it would be fun to share some bits of my Chronicles of Hairnia with you.  The funny thing is that this doesn’t even touch on the number of hair changes I had, because most of my hair changes happened pre digital cameras and pictures weren’t snapped as freely….yeah I am getting that old.  Should I ever find a picture of my Joan Jett hair, my smurf blue hair, or the hot pink with the ‘steps’ cut into my bangs, I will update the page some more.  Enjoy.
