Top 5 Items for Fall 2012

I am on a bit of a roll here with the top 5 lists, so I figured why not one more.  I am quite excited about the fashion for this upcoming fall, as it finds a balance between cozy, sophisticated and a little bit of sass.  These items are 5 of my favourite picks from the trends that I have seen, and will be making their way into my closet.

1.  Cable Knit Sweater

What is more cozy in chilly weather than a cable knit sweater? I am quite excited that these will be readily available this fall.   I am sure that there will be a bevy of colours to choose from, but I love a classic cream or white for the cable knit sweater.

Carry Brochu Walker $295

A|Wear $59

2.  Jumpsuit

You are going to see some different versions of the jumpsuit this season with Bohemian prints, bold colours and a variety of cuts.  I love a flowy jumpsuit, but my favourite version that I have see popping up so far is a tailored version in neutral tones.  It is sophisticated, classy, flattering for a variety of body types and can be worn to work or for a night out.

Rachel Zoe $486

Mango $93

3. Red Shoe

This is probably one of my most favourite items, as it is bold and hot!  Imagine one of these sassy red shoes paired with the jumpsuits above, love it.  There will be a selection of reds from flats to pumps, and all will add a pop to your outfit and make you standout.

Luichiny $94

Aimee $70

4.  Military Coat

There will actually be several elements of military in everything from pants to boots, and my choice, the coat.  The military coat is a classic piece to add to your wardrobe and will not only keep you warm, but keep you looking chic with details of epaulets and double breasted tailoring.

Mango $155

Lipsy $125

5.  Slip Dress

The slip dress will be making its way into fall fashion, and will work as a fantastic layering piece.  Pair it up with your favourite tights, whether they are textured, bold coloured, or neutral and enjoy this throwback to grunge.

Free People $87

Coco’s Fortune $67

Colour Blocking

Colour blocking has been a trend that has made its way through the decades.  In the sixties it was YSL’s Mondrian dress. In the seventies it was muted patchwork.  In the eighties it was glammed up with sequins and boxy silhouettes.  And in the nineties it was blocks of bright neon.

If you go into any stores, or open any magazines right now you will see that colour blocking is currently a huge trend and is being used with bold colours of the upcoming seasons, in many forms.

Hat Wishlist

One of my goals for the Spring & Summer seasons approaching us is to try and pull off wearing hats more.  Throughout winter months, I am always sporting beanies and the occasional felt fedora or cloche, but for some reason I stop once summer approaches. There are 2 reasons I want to start sporting them with sunnier months.  One is to protect the old skin from the sun as I have started to embrace my pale porcelain complexion in the recent years. And the Second reason is that I have a hard time getting my little guy to keep hats on his head, so I’m hoping to lead by example and he will follow.  Plus, what is easier than tossing on a hat on those days that your hair is being less than cooperative.

This is my hat wishlist.  My favourite is the HTC fedora.  Do you have any favourites for the upcoming sunny season?

Goorin Bros. Da Fraaanch Porkpie Hat - $54

Acapulco Raffia Shapeable Straw Cowboy Hat - $38

Eugenia Kim Marine Linen Flat Hat - $160

Goorin Bros. Eden Floppy Hat- $49

HTC Straw Sorbet Bandana Fedora - $245

5 Favourite Items for Spring 2012

Alright, let’s take a little break from hair and concentrate on what to wear with your lovely ‘do.  I have been window shopping lately and have found that the theme across the board is pretty much the same as the hair trends, which is feminine ease, pops of colour and understated sexiness.  I love the direction that fashion is going for the upcoming season and I can honestly say that I am relieved. This time last year I was struggling to find much that I liked in stores as it was all a little too granny 90’s chic for me, and this year I am seeing a far more modern take on classic cuts.

So, I would like to share with you 5 of my favourite items for Spring 2012.  I am a fairly curvy girl so these are all items that I feel comfortable in, but there are versions of each of them that are cut to flatter any body type.

1. Sheer Chiffon Top

This is probably one of my favourite items that I have invested in this year, as I have already bought about 4 versions.  The thing that I love about the Sheer Chiffon Top it has a nice flow away from the body to it so you don’t need to be as self conscious about those love handles and muffin tops, but you can still see the silhouette of the body with the sheerness of the shirt so it is not dowdy.  These tops are everywhere in stores in a variety of prints inlcuding floral, polka dots and animal.  If you want to opt for a solid colour, try out some of the season’s hot bold colours of orange or green.

BB Dakota - Moxie Flight Chiffon Top $61

Sparkle & Fade - Sleeveless Chiffon Shirt $49

Stitches - Floral Chiffon Top $14.99

2. Flouncy Shorts

I love that this style of shorts will be readily available for the spring and summer months this year.  As I mentioned before, I have some curve and most of it resides around my bottom half, so shorts are always a nightmare for me as they are not usually cut for my body type.  Flouncy shorts however have the flow of a skirt and a little more room for my ‘oomph’ and on the other end of the spectrum they can add a little more volume for those seeking a little more curve.  These will be available in bold colours, pastels and neutrals, so whatever tickles your fancy.

Forever 21 - Pleated Shorts $23.80

Kimchi - Blue Bow Short $49

Talula Babaton - Alvin Shorts $110

3. Denim Shirt

Majority of stores have some version of the denim shirt in their spring stock.  You can find a variety of styles and washes, and match it up with the flouncy shorts above or a pair of skinny cargos, and I would even encourage the Canadian Tuxedo (denim on denim), just make sure that the denims contrast.

Zara - Denim Shirt $59.90

H&M - Denim shirt with Tie $34.95

Urban Renewal - Cold Shoulder Denim Shirt $49

4. Asymmetrical Skirt

There are a variety of asymmetrical skirts that are on the racks, but my favourtie is the style that I refer to as the ‘mullet skirt’, which is short in the front and long in the back.  You can find this style in dress form as well and in all of the lengths, minis, midis and maxis.  My favourite is the mini in front and having the back hit about mid calf, as I can still wear a mini but it is a bit more modest and I not worry about my lovely cellulite making an appearance in the back.  When I have been out and about lately I have mainly seen this style in neutrals, bright bold colours and lots of prints.

Zara - Asymmetric Chiffon Skirt $59.90

Silence & Noise - Asymmetrical Midi Skirt $59

Dorothy Perkins - Cream Bird Asymmetric Dress $55

5. Braided Sandals

In the past years there has been many versions of the braided sandal and they are not going anywhere anytime soon.  There are some really cute styles for this upcoming season and in everything from a flat, to a wedge to a heel.  And they will go perfectly with all of the items listed above.

Steve Madden - Pyramidd sandals $69.95

Born - Kaspin Wedges $145

Frye - Joy Huarache Sling $198

Hair Trends for Spring/Summer 2012

Winter is coming to an end, so here are some of the upcoming trends that you will see in the months of spring and summer for 2012.  The common theme that you will find throughout all of the trends for the upcoming season is a feminine ease, and with the right style and product, many of these can be wash and go.

The ‘Wet Look’

This slicked back ‘wet look’ was seen on several runways including Donna Karan, Mugler, Alexander Wang, VPL and Chanel.  This can be worn in a variety of styles from damp waves to a product drenched chignon to only doing ‘wet’ roots.  The look can be achieved by towel drying your hair and applying a wax and gloss throughout, avoiding the roots and finish of with hairspray.

Center Part

This version of the center part is one that creates the look of effortlessness and ease.  The center part graced the runways of Calvin Klein, Band of Outsiders and Burberry Prorsum. The look is almost stepping into a 90’s grunge era by creating an urban wave with tousled locks.  The key to this is not to make the look too perfect, in fact tossing your head upside down to blowdry with a mild mousse or lotion would work just perfect.  You can also take your curling iron, or straightener and add a slight curl to the ends to finish off the look.

The headwear for the upcoming season is everything from scarves, wraps and floppy hats and really embraces the retro vibe.  This look is fantastic  with tousled locks and perfect if you want that extra 20 mins of beauty sleep.  Scarves and wraps were seen on several runways including Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang and Nicholas K.

Top Knot

The top knot and high piled messy bun have been around for a couple of years now and are still holding quite strong.  This look was seen on L.A.M.B., Jen Kao and Lavin runways.  It is a fairly effortless look that doesn’t require much time and works best on medium to longer hair.  The key is to make it messy chic.

Bouffants, fingerwaves, and big blowouts were on several runways including Diane Von Furstenburg, Tracy Reese, Rochas and Fendi.  All eras were pulled from and showcased, but the key is to take those looks and slightly deconstruct them to give them a modern edge.

Extreme Side Part

The extreme side part was seen on Dior, Derek Lam and Emilio Pucci runways.  This look is achieved by parting your hair where the tip of your eyebrow ends and tossing it back in either a messy or slicked chignon or low pony.

The Bob

The bob for this season is flirty and fun, almost a throwback to classic Meg Ryan.  Dior and Luca Luca both featured some fantastic bobs and faux bobs on their runways.   If you are not wanting to take the step of chopping off your locks but want to have a little fun with the look then try the faux bob which I am sporting in the pic below.  You can set your hair with some hot rollers and then just start curling the hair under and pinning it up.  Finish it off with a flexible hold hairspray.

Bold Colour

Some of the colour on the runway for spring/summer 2012 was crazy, bold and oh so fun.  Both Thakoon and Narcisco Rodriguez showcased the ‘graffiti’ sprayed look with bright pinks, oranges and yellows.  Peter Som took a more subtle route  and had chunky highlights of pastels throughout his models’ hair.

And don’t worry gentlemen, I have not forgotten about you…

Men’s Style

The Men’s style across the runways showed a lot of length on top and short around the sides and back.  Fairly retro and good news for the boys that like to go a little longer in between haircuts.
